Module 3 - Student Engagement

“In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education.”

(Glossary of Educational Reform, 2016)

For students to be highly motivated to learn and progress, educators must understand them. It is necessary to develop a student profile by gathering information that includes demographics, learning styles and preference, academic achievement, interests, and learning needs. Having this data will assist knowing the learners in your classroom so you can design activities to effectively meet the needs of all students.

Students voice is important to be heard! When schools give students the agency and the tools to speak out, the effects can resonate across students’ lives.

Assessment and evaluation begins at the very first days

of the school year.  Initial or Diagnostic assessment aims to:

  • Create a psychologically safe environment for every learner.

  • Determine each student's readiness for learning.

  • Identify multiple access points to the curriculum to increase engagement and success.

  • Develop and demonstrate greater emotional intelligence in the classroom

The process of becoming engaged as active partners can give young people a set of strategies they can use to create positive change in future classrooms or communities.
